Cirkulär design - byggnadsvård, återbruk & ekodesign

Circular design - building maintenance, recycling & eco-design

For function, durability and soul.

To rebuild instead of new. To preserve instead of demolish. To reuse instead of throwing away. This is where we create change – for real.

Every choice counts

The construction and real estate sector accounts for a significant part of Sweden's climate impact. In order for us to reach the climate goals in the Paris Agreement – and our own national goals – emissions need to be reduced drastically.

The good news?

There are already tools to use today. One of the most powerful is recycling .

Recycling building materials is no longer a vision of the future. It is a concrete action that every project – small or large – can implement immediately. Every reused window, every preserved wooden beam, every dismantled kitchen door that gets a new life is one step closer to a circular construction industry.

Circular construction is smart construction

A circular building strategy is not just about the environment. It is also about economics, craftsmanship, identity – and about care. Care for what already exists, care for resources, and care for people's experience of space and materials.

Materials that bear traces of time – scratches, patina, stories – add a sense of authenticity that newly produced materials can rarely recreate. It is something that both clients and users value more and more. A building with visible reuse signals sustainability, character and awareness.

Change starts in the sketchbook

Building circularly starts long before the first sod is broken. It's about thinking in life cycles from the very first idea. Already in the planning phase, we can ask questions like:

  • Do we have to build new, or can we preserve and transform what exists?

  • How can the building have multiple possible lives – through different uses, flexible floor plans or demountable parts?

  • What recycled materials are already available?

  • How can we reduce waste, simplify recycling and create logistics that promote circular flows?

Every stage of the construction process – from idea to management – holds opportunities for circular thinking. In the design, construction phase and renovation, recycled products can be integrated. In management, it is about caring, repairing and adapting rather than demolishing. And in a final stage, every material should be carefully inventoried, sorted and given a new life where possible.

Preserve – rebuild – reuse

One of the most important insights in circular construction is that the most sustainable is often what already exists. Preservation, renovation and conversion should be prioritized over new construction. Not only for the sake of the climate – but also because our built environments carry values that cannot be recreated.

Converting offices into homes, preserving facades or giving an older kitchen a new look with loving renovation – all of this is part of a larger shift. A shift where we move away from the linear – take, use, throw away – and into something more sustainable, intelligent and beautiful.

Together we shape the future

The circular construction industry is not created by a single actor. It is a web where clients, designers, craftsmen, managers and decision-makers together bear responsibility – and opportunity. Creating real change requires collaboration, courage and new habits.

But it also requires that we look up. That we see the value in the crooked, the old, the existing. That we dare to build on what already exists. And that we understand: every recycled brick is not just a kilo of carbon dioxide saved – it is also a statement about the future we want to live in.

It's time to start building for function, sustainability and soul 🤍
